The IAINBAXTER&raisonnE is an experimental electronic collection, virtual exhibition platform and research environment devoted to the life’s work of internationally-active Canadian conceptual artist IAIN BAXTER& that seeks to expand and transform the catalogue raisonné format into a collaborative scholarly communications and learning zone. Developed in partnership with IAIN BAXTER& and Louise Chance Baxter and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of scholars including Paris-based curator and writer Rose Marie Barrientos, Montréal-based curator Vincent Bonin, Paris-based professor, curator and writer Christophe Domino, Virginia Commonwealth University-based scholar Dennis Durham, doctoral candidate Isabelle Hermann (art history - Paris 1), and Windsor-based artist Victor Romao as well as York University Libraries, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and the Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art (ccca.ca), the prototype raisonnE breaks with the linear, hierarchical and static structures of traditional catalogues raisonnés by adding content in direct response to the evolving creative, research and teaching needs of a diverse constituency of artists, scholars and students currently researching IAIN BAXTER& and/or the historical transformation of catalogues raisonnés, collections and collecting behaviours.

To request that specific materials in the BAXTER& fonds held by the AGO (to view contents, follow the link below) be prioritized for digitization in order to facilitate the creation of private research “albums” or public, user-curated “exhibitions” of raisonnE contents online, potential contributors are invited to register with the e-Chair as designated “researchers.”

The raisonnE also welcomes user-contributed descriptors of images in its collection as well as user-generated annotations. For more information contact the e-Chair. Other scholarly and creative contributions and interventions are also welcome, including interviews, essays and reflections. The e-Chair acts as a mediator between researchers and the archive. Digitized materials resulting from this dialogical interaction function, on one hand, as a third term between the institution and the researcher. But, whereas archival materials held by the Art Gallery of Ontario will be digitized according to established institutional practices and in conformity with recognized standards, the artist’s working archive will be documented using less intrusive, ethnographic methods and at every stage in direct collaboration with IAIN BAXTER&. The traces of this mediating activity constitute a new form of electronic publication imbricated in an ongoing process of Action Research.

The raisonnE is a multi-lingual, artist-researcher collaboration which aims to generate reusable virtual spaces in support of evolving research projects and creative communication through new approaches to data curation and social production such as blogging. The physical archive is thereby dematerialized and transformed into a social “event.” This open-ended and critical approach to the catalogue and collection is inspired, in part, by examples of pre-modern catalogues raisonnés by Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774) and Edme-François Gersaint (1694-1750) as well as the mobile library of Aby Warburg (1866-1929) in addition to the flexible, “informational” infrastructure of the N.E. Thing Co. (1966-1978) created and founded by IAIN BAXTER&. Just as the sales catalogues of Gersaint prioritized the “liberty of the compiler” and Warburg’s library reflected “every progress in [the researcher’s] system of thought, every new idea about the inter-relation of facts,” the transitional archive of the raisonnE is constantly in motion (Larkin, 2003; Saxl). Recalling also the information sheets generated by N.E. Thing Co.’s visual researchers, the raisonnE aims to develop an infinitely extensible support for a “flat” array of interdisciplinary data. Jens Hoffmann’s theatrical notion of “ephemeral” curating as well as the pedagogical installations of artist Thomas Hirschhorn provide additional models for the maximalist spirit of the raisonnE.

Adam Lauder is W.P. Scott Chair for Research in e-Librarianship at York University in Toronto. A chapter authored by Lauder on BAXTER& and the conceptual corporation N.E. Thing Co. will appear in the forthcoming YYZ publication byproducts: On the Excess of Embedded Art Practices. He is also curator of the travelling exhibition It’s Alive! Bertram Brooker and Vitalism, which opens at Museum London in December, 2010 and runs through May 2011 as well as the author of a chapter on the multidisciplinary Brooker in The Logic of Nature, The Romance of Space. His article on Canadian architect, sportsman and visionary conservationist Percy Nobbs, “Bio-Political Landscapes: The Preservation Tactics of Percy Nobbs,” will be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Future Anterior. Lauder is also a regular contributor to the Toronto arts magazine Hunter and Cook.

Bienvenue au IAINBAXTER&raisonnE, une collection numérique innovatrice et une environnement d’exposition et de recherche virtuel consacré à l’œuvre d’IAIN BAXTER&, qui vise à élargir et transformer le catalogue raisonné en zone d’apprentissage et de communication érudite. Cette nouvelle ressource éducative, mise au point en partenariat avec IAIN BAXTER& et Louise Chance Baxter et en collaboration avec une équipe internationale et interdisciplinaire de chercheurs comprenant Rose Marie Barrientos, commissaire et écrivaine basée à Paris, Vincent Bonin, conservateur basé à Montréal, Christophe Domino, professeur, commissaire et écrivain basé à Paris, Dennis Durham, chercheur basé à Virginia Commonwealth University, Isabelle Hermann, doctorante en histoire de l'art - Paris 1, et Victor Romao, artiste basé à Windsor, ainsi que York University Libraries, le Musée des beaux arts de l’Ontario (AGO) et le Centre de l’art contemporain canadien (ccca.ca), rompt avec les structures linéaire, hiérarchique et statique des catalogues raisonnés traditionnels. Fruite d’une collaboration multilingues entre des artistes et des chercheurs, le raisonnE vise à générer des nouvelles approches à la gestion des données et à la production communautaire (par exemple, les blogs), et a créer des nouveaux espaces virtuels réutilisables qui soutiennent des projets de recherche et la communication créative. L’archive physique est ainsi dématérialisée, transformée en « événement » sociale.
