Willie Shaugnosh

Wellington “Willie” Shaugnosh was born on February 28, 1914, in Walpole Island. He became a member of the Chatham Coloured All-Stars baseball team in 1935, as the sole First Nations member of the team.[1]Shaugnosh was noted as one of the “best pitchers[s] in the Western Counties League,” whose consistency on the field made him an excellent teammate.[2]After his baseball career ended, he married Velma Stonefish in 1950 and worked as a labourer. Shaugnosh passed away in February 1982, but his legacy as a groundbreaking First Nations athlete in southern Ontario will live on.
