About
Project Overview
In 2019-2020, Irene Moore Davis of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society and Heidi Jacobs of the University of Windsor’s Leddy Library, produced a documentary film The North was Our Canaan: Exploring Sandwich Town’s Underground Railroad History and a companion website. This project was awarded a Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation in 2021.
In 2021, Moore Davis and Jacobs were awarded a grant from the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan to develop and produce Across the River to Freedom: Early Black History in Sandwich, Ontario.
In addition to the generous support from the Gordie Howe International Bridge, this project is indebted to the support of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society and the University of Windsor. The website was designed by students in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information.
